Captain Derek Horton began his career with Austell Police Department in 2005. After completing field training Captain Horton dedicated seven years to serving as a Patrol Officer. During his tenure, he was responsible for ensuring the safety and protection of the Austell community.

He sharpened his problem-solving skills and began to hone his natural affinity for leadership. In 2012 He earned the rank of Sergeant and assumed the responsibility of supervising personnel, processing inmates at the city jail, and ensuring accurate maintenance of large-scale records. After successfully serving as Sergeant for eight years he was promoted to Lieutenant over Support Administration where he was responsible for supervising the day-to-day activities of the city jail, city court, records, and 911/communications. 

In 2022 He was promoted to the rank of Captain and has served over the Support Administration and currently serves over the Patrol unit, Community Engagement, and 911/Communications. Captain Horton is dedicated to protecting the residents of the City of Austell. He is a recognized credible leader with a firm, honest, and loyal reputation.
